If you are reading this, then you must be wondering how you might contribute to Harûah and, if you do, what you might expect for your effort. Please read these guidelines carefully and completely to avoid inappropriate submissions.

We do not accept email or postal mail submissions. Really, we don't. Our editors access our database from all around the world. Submitting as instructed below is the ONLY way to get your submission before the eyes of those who will be selecting content for Harûah.

Content Guidelines Applicable to all Submissions

Haruah, accepts literary and mainstream fiction, flash fiction (under 1000 words), poetry, inspirational stories and personal essays. We will also consider exceptional work that falls under mainstream genre fiction (historical, romance, mystery). We do not accept works of science fiction, fantasy and the speculative genre.

The best way to discover what types of works we accept is to explore our archives. The following will give you a general but non-inclusive list of what we want and don't want.

We are seeking fiction, non-fiction, and poetry that is:

  • Well-written, emotionally engaging, and entertaining
  • Uplifting and/or enlightening by using thought provoking prose and mind-expanding content
  • Compatible with the Christian faith, whether or not the author is from that faith
  • Dealing with the nitty-gritty issues and struggles people face in everyday life
  • Demonstrating God's work in the midst of life's struggles that arise naturally from the story
  • Confined to content that fits within a PG13 rating--suitable for younger teens

The characteristics of submissions that will likely end up in our reject pile are:

  • Attempts to proselytize to a faith or belief system
  • Theological and doctrinal teachings, except in editorials and devotionals written for a wide audience
  • Themes and conclusions that are contrary to standard Christian morals and beliefs
  • Content that tears down rather than builds up, divides rather than brings together
  • Cardboard characters, sappy stories, weak dialog, or stories with twist endings/unnatural conclusions
  • Submissions with multiple grammar issues, typos, misspellings and the like--please run your submission through a critique group or someone good at catching these errors before submitting
  • Attacks on religious institutions--if necessary to the story they shouldn't specify a group
  • Submissions that contain cussing--an occasional instance may be considered if necessary for the story
  • Submissions that contain graphic scenes of violence and/or sex--most of these can be alluded to in a tasteful manner that gets the idea across, but they need to be necessary to the plot and characters

We will not ask what your faith tradition is or whether you have one. All submission will be evaluated on their own merits per the information above. For further clarification, read the response of Double-Edged Publishing's Bill Snodgrass to an inquiry concerning how we handle religion.

Genres

Haruah is open to a variety of genres, but most of what we will use will be literary, contemporary, mainstream, or something close to that. Romance, history, and mystery are considered when they are exceptional.

If your story has fantasy or science fiction elements, they should be minimal at most. Consider submitting fantasy, science fiction, and other speculative fiction to Ray Gun Revival, Dragons, Knights, & Angels, Fear and Trembling, or MindFlights-sister magazines in the Double-Edged Publishing family.

Regarding Reprints

We prefer original work, but will consider exceptional reprints.

Publication Format and Rights Purchased

Haruah is published both as an Internet magazine and a print magazine. Primarily, the print version will include only fiction, poetry, stories, and illustrations. On rare occasion, we may solicit essays and other articles to be included.

Haruah, therefore, will contract with the author to secure rights in a variety of ways. Depending on how a submission will be used, we may ask for:

  • One-time Electronic Publication Rights, for publication in the English language. (Internet format)
  • Non-exclusive Print Publication Rights, for publication in the English language. (Print format)

Rights may be requested in any one or combination of the above.

Compensation

Haruah is a paying market for stories and poetry. Currently, our rates are:

  • $5.00 - All stories, including flash and historical/true to life.
  • $2.00 - Poetry of any length.

Unfortunately, we are not yet able to offer pay for illustrations or offer contributor copies of our print magazine. We do plan on offering that and raising rates as money becomes available in the future. (All funding for Haruah comes from donations. For more information see our "About Haruah" page.) In addition, you still get the benefit of being published in a quality magazine with high standards, as well as your accepted creation available in hard copy.

Poetry:

We are looking for original, engaging, and well-crafted poetry. We accept work from young and not-so-young poets, published or unpublished poets. Let your work speak for itself and send us your very best.

Fiction:

Anything under 1000 words is considered flash fiction. Normally, we consider fiction and stories up to about 5000 words in length. We are willing to consider longer works but please query first before you send.

Novel Excerpts

We are willing to consider excerpts from novels as long as they are stand-alone—has at least one sub-plot line/story that comes to a conclusion.

Non Fiction

We are interested in reading both full-length inspirational stories, memoirs, and personal essays up to 5000 words in length and very short non-fiction pieces ( about 500 words or less ). Longer works, please query before you send.

Illustrations

We are looking for cover illustrations as well as illustrations for stories. The principles of our content guidelines apply to image art as well.

Global Submission Process and Formatting

We rely on on-line submissions. We do not accept email or postal mail submissions. The process is fairly easy. Start with the following link and proceed as directed:

- Click Here to Access Submission System -

No simultaneous submissions. If we accept your submission, we expect to be able to publish it. If you have submitted to more than one publication and are accepted in more than one place, then what? If you have submitted elsewhere, wait for a response before submitting here.

Editorial Process

A pool of editors will review your submissions. Most likely, you will get some remarks about your manuscript in an e-mail, if rejected. We do not promise to read the whole thing. For example, if the grammar is prohibitively flawed, we might just remark on a couple of paragraphs and send it back to you by e-mail. We will note clearly if we want you to revise and resubmit.

Liking something is in the eye of the beholder, so just because we don't like it, does not mean it is bad!

Publication Process

Haruah's Internet magazine features rolling content. About once a week, a new work is added to the contents and the oldest feature rotates off. The print version is published quarterly, and can be purchased through our printing and distribution vender. See our main page for the current publications available.

Submissions will generally be in the contents from between six to eight weeks. Once submissions have rotated out of contents, they become part of our archives. The archives are a searchable list of all articles that have appeared in Haruah. Authors may request that works be removed from archives by contacting the editor.
