The Angel of My Desire

R. L. Copple

Poetry
Contemporary

I pushed her out,
The angel of my desire.

As I lay trapped
On a medical bed,

A light above
Backlit the form

Of one who
Kicked for months,

Of one who
Struggled to escape,

Then entered to hoard
The yearnings buried deep.

Doctors and nurses
Shook their frowning heads

As I cradled her in my arms,
My child fresh from the womb,

Yet destined to enter the grave
Before she could cry,

And become
The angel of my desire.
