Heroes
I hang them on my wall,
I watch them on TV,
I buy them at the mall,
To get away from me.
Heroes
If I can be like Mike,
Or catch a ball like Rice,
Or a coach who's good at psych,
I could add to life some spice.
Heroes
Do I wear a cape and tights?
A helmet, jersey, and pads?
Or blue hair molded into spikes?
And say, “Dude, that's rad”?
Heroes
What do I see in the mirror?
Someone who wants to mimic
All the heroes out of terror
Of breaking—the pattern,
My chains of expectations
And prevent me
From finding
The hero within.
