by the roadside a mangyan child stands in a man's t-shirt
sunlight seeps through the green canopy to the forest floor
on a one wheeled wagon the child's satchel dangles
wild tamarao tread heavy steps through the underbrush
sunlight seeps through the green canopy to the forest floor
air moist and thick glosses the child's skin and black hair
wild tamarao tread heavy steps through the underbrush
"they beg in the streets," says the van driver, his voice rough
air moist and thick glosses the child's skin and black hair
easing up the marble strewn roadway, the white van passes
"they beg in the streets," says the van driver, his voice rough
beyond the mountain lay white sand beaches and blue surf
easing up the marble strewn roadway, the white van passes
we do not stop, we continue our journey to the sea
beyond the mountain lay white sand beaches and blue surf
our skin chills to gooseflesh from the van's air conditioning
we do not stop, we continue our journey to the sea
far from home, I dream of cool nights filled with gray stars
our skin chills to gooseflesh from the van's air conditioning
the marble mined from the mountain gleams like the full moon
far from home, I dream of cool nights filled with gray stars
on a one wheeled wagon the child's satchel dangles
the marble mined from the mountain gleams like the full moon
by the roadside a mangyan child stands in a man's t-shirt

Mindoro, one of the most beautiful islands in the Philippines, is well-known for its beautiful white sand beaches, and coral reefs. While tourists bask without a care on the beautiful beaches of this island, the Mangyan - an indigenous ethnic tribe - struggle to survive in a world quick to take advantage of their innocence.
