After 39 days
and 39 nights
of rain

hammering
down on the earth,
churning up mud,
battering the roses
and strewing their petals
like ashes across their graves,

the sun came out today,

and touched my upturned face
with a caress like
a long-lost friend.

R.F. Long is an Irish writer of (mainly) fantasy fiction. Her short story 'The Lost Rose', published in Haruah, was a Top 10 finalist in the 2007 Preditors and Editors Awards. Recent sales include 'Carrying Keptara' to Hadley Rille Books' 'Ruins Metropolis' Anthology, and 'Elements' to Flashing Swords.  

She works in a specialised library of rare and unusual books.
