Stone Speak

A hedge of grass
repeatedly missed by the mower
surrounds me from all sides.
Long blades of lush green
stretch their length across me
like the strands of a bad comb-over.

More than a century of nature's elements
have weathered away my mysterious face
leveling all but the deepest of my crevices
obscuring the letters of a distant name
and two dates separated by a tiny dash
defining the course of an entire life.

But I remain as a somber testament
to those who never knew him
that given time, they too
shall be forgotten
on this earthly
side of life.
