Wildflower Wine

A.G. Elrod

Poetry
Romance

Back I look into thine eyes
Back into the black
Back into those seas of see
That all and nothing lack

Into the darkness—back I peer—
That neither nothing sees
That never nothing new beholds
And's ever new to me

Back I look into thine eyes
Back I gaze and dream
I dream of dec'rous, spangled sod—
Of all Earth's wildest things

I dream I press wildflower wine
To fill the absence with
To see its brightness overflow
Your soul's eternal width

And then, when out my brightness too,
I look upon your face
I'll see what grace has painted young
When darkness is displace'd

For thee I'd press wildflower wine
A dainty draught of daisies
Of daffodils a vintage sweet
Smooth'd 'neath Spring-light lazy

I'd press for thee wildflower wine
That jointly we might drink
Of all the rays of brightest sun
And Earth's brave pageantry

For thee I'd press wildflower wine
That wild might drink the wild
And I would make wildflower wine
To slay this jealous child

I'd press for thee wildflower wine
Of holy things that greet
And creeping things that overgrow
That place where all must meet

Of things that grow (I'd make our wine)
Above six deepest feet
There, in the place where once we met
And in the end we'll meet
